The Break-Even Point Math
The break-even year is calculated by dividing the Upfront EV Premium by the Yearly Fuel Savings. Once you cross this year, the EV starts actually saving you money compared to the petrol car.
Worked Example
The 15km/day Commuter's Mistake
Vikram was excited. He wanted to do his part for the environment and save on rising petrol costs, so he bought a shiny new EV for ₹18 Lakhs. His old petrol car would have cost him ₹13 Lakhs. He paid a ₹5 Lakh premium for the "privilege" of zero tailpipe emissions.
But Vikram works a hybrid schedule and only commutes to his office 3 days a week. His total daily running is barely 15 km. When he finally ran the math, the reality hit him hard. He was saving about ₹24,000 a year on fuel. To recover his ₹5 Lakh upfront premium, it would take him over 20 years.
Vikram had fallen for the classic EV trap. He assumed that "cheaper running costs" automatically meant "cheaper car". But EVs are fundamentally a math equation: you are pre-paying for your fuel upfront. If you don't drive enough to use that pre-paid fuel, you are just giving the car manufacturer an interest-free loan. If you drive less than 30 km a day, buy the petrol car. Take that ₹5 Lakh premium and invest it in an index fund. The returns will more than pay for your petrol.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is buying an EV really cheaper than a petrol car?
It depends entirely on your daily running. If you drive less than 20-30 km a day, the massive upfront premium you pay for an EV will take 8-10 years to recover in fuel savings. If you drive 50+ km a day, an EV becomes highly profitable within 3-4 years.
Did you include battery replacement cost in the EV calculator?
Modern EV batteries are covered by 8-year/1,60,000 km warranties. The vast majority of buyers sell their cars within 7-8 years, meaning they never bear the battery replacement cost. This is why our 10-year model assumes zero battery replacement out-of-pocket.
Why is EV maintenance so cheap?
A petrol engine has over 2,000 moving parts, requiring constant oil changes, filters, spark plugs, and timing belts. An EV drivetrain has around 20 moving parts. Aside from tires, brake pads (which last longer due to regenerative braking), and cabin air filters, there is very little to maintain.
